'A real battle for Odysseus: The Greek islands fighting over Homer’s hero'

The blockbuster film of The Odyssey by Christopher Nolan has drawn attention to the ancient poem of that name and to the Greek island of Ithaca. In light of this Victoria Harper, Executive Editor of the Independent, kindly asked me to write a piece on my connection to Ithaca and on the recent claims put forward by the neighbouring larger and richer island of Kefalonia to be the true home of Odysseus. These false claims have led to neglect of the archaeological sites on Ithaca, including that of the centre of administration, of hero worship, and of the probable palace of Odysseus.
