Good News!

The really Good News is a change of heart at the Ministry of Culture in Athens concerning the archaeological site at Agios Athanasios in Ithaca. You can read their document in Greek here: https://www.culture.gov.gr/el/Information/SitePages/view.aspx?nID=5360 Since excavation was halted in 2011, Professors Lolos and Marampea from the University of Ioannina have continued to sort through the boxes of finds made by their predecessors Litsa Kontorli-Papadopoulou and Thanasis Papadopoulos. The Ministry of Culture have now announced that the complex at Agios Athanasios can be definitively identified as a centre of hero-worship of Odysseus on Ithaca. A few interesting things have been unpacked from the many boxes including a couple of roof tiles from 2nd C BC with writing referring to Odysseus. But recognition by the ministry is the real prize and more should follow.
