The Archaeological Evidence for the Palace of Odysseus on Ithaca

Updated: Mar 31

This publication collects together a paper concerning the excavation that took place at Agios Athanasios / School of Homer between 1994 and 2011 and a second paper, published here for the first time, concerning the hero-worship of Odysseus on Ithaca. Description of the palatial remains is presented here by the archaeologist himself. Claims from the neighbouring islands of Lefkas and Kefalonia to be Homeric Ithaca have recently proliferated. In response, Professor Papadopoulos throws out a challenge to these claimants to provide proper archaeological evidence for their hypotheses, something they have never done. This publication will be especially welcome to visitors to the half-excavated and neglected archaeological site itself, where they will find very little information, and to all devotees of Homer.
